My Ratcage by Feyrah My Ratcage by Feyrah
This is my ratcage that is still empty but will be filled with
three little sweethearts by tomorrow evening. :)
Expect tons of photos. lol.

Two litterboxes are still missing, I shall get them today. I feed
Tima "Rattima" food. The cat-toy balls that are filled with
newspaper pieces have hidden treats in them (dried banana
and a yoghurt drops) so they have something to do if they
want to. I've also hidden a treat in the Sputnik (black/grey
hanging house), in the yellow house and in the pile of
newspaper/toiletpaper. :)

I have two foodbowls and two waterbottles. The wire ladders
will be replaced with wood later since rats aren't supposed to
walk on wire too often.

Mom still isn't too exited about me getting rats, but I'm
thankful she has given me a chance. She's also been leaving
stuff in my room for me to use for the cage when I was in italy
the last 10 days, which is really cute. Thanks Mom!

Yay!
My mom loves my rats :D It wasn't hard to convince her though, and it definitely helps when you have two grandmothers who love rats :D

Instead of using wood for the ramps, try finding something plastic based to put over it. Wood absorbs urine and will hold the smell. Fleece also works good, because its washable. Also, be cautious of newspaper, because the ink is toxic and can make them sick. If you use newspaper, make sure its non-toxic/soy based ink. It also gets wet and soggy fairly quick. I preferred to use bedding like yesterdays news in the litter pans, and fleece everywhere else. You can just lay it on the levels and use clips to hold it in place.

I know that. Thats why i would paint it with childrens-toy varnish (non-toxic). Like I did with the yellow house and the tube. But thank you!

The ink on newspapers is not-toxic over here. Ive asked around in forums, and even one of the factories
sent the forum a statement of the ink being non-toxic. It's all arranged and researched! =)

Good for you! I'm glad to see some people really looking into rat care before owning rats. You'll have bunches of fun, and I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures of those adorable boys

In addition to that, try supplementing the tima rat food with normal food such as pastas, whole grain bread, fruits and vegetables.

P.S. Don't give in and feed your rats a diet of strictly yogurt drops, chocolate, cream cheese, and avocado bits as they will constantly beg you to do. Lol

wow! That's awesome! Looks like those rats are going to have a blast XD Are you putting sawdust down or are they fine with just newspaper? I've never had rats before so i don't really know :D

Saedust can cause breathing issues and hurt their feet, so I dont use it. Newspaper is fine, non-toxic, and very absorbant. They get shredded newspaper as well so they can "dig" unter them. :)

Its name is "Savic Royal Suite 65 Double" over here but its the same as critter nation. :) I think it's pretty much the best you could find... it has wheels, a good, smallish distance between the wirebars, amazing, huge, save doors... i love it!

I was using a Ferret Nation cage for a little while for all of mine until my petite female started squeezing through the bars XD But that was when i had around 7 Rats I only have 2 now so I downsized their cage to a 3 ft standard wired cage with a nice removable bottom pan :)

^^! my first rat was a buck. He ended up living to be 3 1/2 years old until he got a bad cyst and the only option was to put him to sleep ;( I only have females now because I grew very attached to one of his daughters ^^
